Colwell Wins the KKM Giveback Classic Presented by TRD.

Jesse Colwell scored a win that he will never forget Wednesday night at Millbridge Speedway.  The 19-year-old racer from Red Bluff, California pulled away on a restart with five laps to go to win the inaugural Keith Kunz Giveback Classic and earn himself a ride for the 33rd Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals.

“I think it means a lot,” Colwell told Speed51.com after the race.  “It definitely was one of the biggest races of my career, and if there was one race I could ever win it was going to be this one that I wanted to win.”

Colwell, driving the No. 86 Outlaw Kart, powered to the inside of polesitter Caden Kvapil on Lap 14 and never looked back en route to the potential career-making victory.

“I knew that you could get more speed by not following somebody, if you could get clean air and more speed on the top and get rolling around you could get back under them,” he stated.  “Once you take the clean air away from them, it’s going to slow them down a bunch.  I knew that I just had to get down in front of him and get down to the bottom.”

Although Colwell has competed at Millbridge a handful of times in recent years, luck has not been on his side during the track’s premier events.

“We’ve ran here probably four times, five times and every time we’re really good.  Leading the race and then break.  I’m glad it finally held together.”

Prior to the final restart with five laps to go, Colwell could be seen waving his hand impatiently while pacing the 1/6-mile oval.  He later explained why he was doing that.

“The clutch was starting to burn up in the motor, so I just wanted them to get the green flag out and let’s get back to going before something breaks.”

With a victory and $2,000 in hand, Colwell will now make plans to head to Tulsa, Oklahoma in January for the Chili Bowl Nationals.  He won’t just be competing in the race; he’ll be driving for the team owned by Keith Kunz that has won the last four versions of the short track spectacle.

“Jesse was hammering the top there early.  You could see that he had a lot of speed up there,” Kunz said of his future driver after the race.  “It was just a matter of making that big lunge and getting around the (Caden) Kvapil kid.  The Kvapil kid was great.  I didn’t know if anybody was going to have anything for him but he and Jesse kind of check out early.  And then Jesse was hammering the top and the smart thing was to move down like he did, and he just checked out once he did.”

Kunz, the race’s namesake, analyzed the event as a whole at the end of the night.

“There were a lot of neat people here tonight,” he stated.  “I’ve seen a lot of people from the NASCAR community.  I think everybody enjoyed the racing tonight.  Every race was a great race and it was a great race track.  The atmosphere was really good.  There were a lot of kids here that shined, but Jesse is on top and we’re going to the Chili Bowl.”

After suffering wing damage early on in the race while tangling with a lapped car, Kvapil battled within the top five before ultimately finishing second.  Although it wasn’t a victory, he turned heads throughout the night, specifically when he knocked Tyler Seavey out of the pole shuffle earlier in the night.

“I know it’s not a win but it feels like it,” Kvapil said after the race.

Dylan Smith battled through the field to round out the podium after starting 10th.  QRC Speed51 Open winner Tyler Seavey finished fourth and California driver Jake Park completed the top five.

Hoosier Tire to give away a pair of tires to select entries as the official tire of the event

SALISBURY, N.C. (July 31, 2018) – Over 100 aspiring drivers from across the United States have been accepted to compete in the Keith Kunz Motorsports (KKM) Giveback Classic Presented by TRD, U.S.A. (Toyota Racing Development) at Millbridge Speedway for the two-night event spanning from Oct. 30 to Oct. 31.

The event hit a milestone 100 entries with only three months left until the race date as officials continue to accept applications through Oct. 1.

“We hoped that we would get a lot of interest from talented drivers across the country, but we never imagined it would be this big,” said Keith Kunz, team owner of KKM. “This race began as my way of giving back to the karting community, and to receive this much interest from across the United States is incredible. We can’t wait to get out to Millbridge Speedway and watch what I’m sure will be an exciting night for everyone involved.”

With drivers hailing from 17 states, it was announced this week that Hoosier Tire has also signed on as the official tire of the KKM Giveback Classic presented by TRD. In an effort to help alleviate costs of competitors, Hoosier Tire will give away a pair of tires to the first 20 drivers that win an open class feature event from Aug. 1 through Oct. 30 if they have already completed their paid entry form.

“We could not be more proud to partner with TRD and now Hoosier Tire for this event,” said Jeremy Burnett, owner of Millbridge Speedway. “To have Hoosier come on with us and help provide some of these competitiors with a pair of tires is an incredible gesture and it will hopefully encourage more drivers to apply and come out to compete in this one-of-a-kind event.”

The unique race event held in Salisbury, North Carolina is open to non-national series drivers of outlaw karts with the winner of the main event getting a ride in a KKM-prepared, TRD-powered midget at the 33rd annual Chili Bowl Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma next year.

Accepted entries range from 10-50 years old, including:

Brent Crews (10, North Carolina) – A native of North Carolina, Crews began kart racing at seven years old competing at GoPro Motorplex (Mooresville, North Carolina) and began dirt racing in the beginner box stock class at Millbridge Speedway a year later. Now 10 years old, he is one of the youngest entries in the KKM Giveback Classic and has plenty of experience on his side. In addition to multiple wins on dirt over the last few seasons, Crews is a seven-time national champion sprint kart driver and won the IAME International Final’s inaugural x30 Mini division title in Le Mans, France in 2017.

Anissa Curtice (16, California) – At five years old, Curtice started her career in karts, becoming a regular on the Northern California racing circuit where she has amassed eight feature wins. In addition to outlaw karts, Curtice competed in legend cars at Redwood Acres (Eureka, California) where she captured a feature event win and earned rookie of the year honors in 2017. She most recently graduated to the open wheel ranks, making her first competitive laps in a full-sized sprint car in May.

In addition to karts, Elledge has made starts in a limited late model and made her national midget debut in the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League in May.

Colby Horn (14, Texas) – A racer at heart, Horn and his father decided to travel from Texas to Millbridge Speedway on a regular basis this summer so the young driver can get more track time before the KKM Giveback Classic. The decision has already paid off as Horn captured his first win at the North Carolina track in June. Horn began his career racing outlaw karts with his brother and won the 2016 Wild West Shootout in the Open Outlaw division at Big Sky Kartway in Montana and the Short Track Shootout at KAM Kartway in Texas earlier this year.

Duke Johnson (17, Oregon) – An Oregon native, Johnson competes on the kart circuit out west where he has captured three open karting championships. Earlier this year, Johnson was victorious at the inaugural Mini Strawberry Cup at Willamette Speedway (Vancouver, Washington) and later won the prestigious 2018 Wild West Shootout in Montana, becoming the second Oregonian to win the race.

Emilee Lowry (15, Oklahoma) – Started her racing career after winning a winged outlaw kart at the 2015 Chili Bowl Nationals for five dollars. Lowry went on to race the kart, receiving the ‘Hard Charger Award’ from Texoma Speedway (Wichita Falls, Texas) later that year. Lowry currently runs in the Outlaw 250 and Open Outlaw divisions at her home track of KAM Kartway (Rhome, Texas) where she is third and first in points, respectively.

Tyler Seavey (22, California) – In what can be deemed a breakout year, Seavey has amassed wins in the Red Bluff Outlaws championship and West Coast Nationals. In May 2018, he joined his younger brother, Logan as a winner of the QRC Open outlaw kart event at Millbridge Speedway.

Casey Starr (19, Oregon) –  An Oregon resident, Starr was a competitive figure skater as a child until she opted to trade her skates in for a driver’s helmet and began racing at the age of 12. Starr has amassed over 15 event wins, including a micro sprint win at River City Speedway (St. Helens, Oregon) earlier this season. After being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in late 2015, she puts her efforts towards raising awareness for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) including having a Crohns and Colitis Awareness graphics set for the KKM Giveback Classic.

Gracie Sonntag (16, Texas) – After closing last season in the top-three in the 250 Outlaw Class, Sonntag has continued  to gain karting experience, moving to the Open Outlaw division this season. Sonntag is the 2016-17 Modified Kart champion in the Midwest Racing Winter Series, finishing in the top-five of the Animal division that same season. Sonntag is a third-generation racer as her father and grandfather both raced as well.

Chili Bowl Ride Up for Grabs in Keith Kunz Give Back Classic at Millbridge

Keith Kunz Motorsports and Millbridge Speedway (NC) will be giving one aspiring race car driver the chance of a lifetime.  The Keith Kunz Motorsports Give Back Classic on Wednesday, October 31 will provide Outlaw Kart racers with an opportunity to win a free ride for the prestigious Chili Bowl Nationals in Tulsa, OK in 2019.

The way the race will work is quite simple: show up to Millbridge Speedway with an Outlaw Kart on October 31, win the race and earn a Keith Kunz Motorsports ride in the 33rd Annual Chili Bowl Nationals.

“We are really excited to be teamed up with Keith Kunz Motorsports to be able to potentially further someone’s career by giving them a once in a lifetime shot at driving a top-notch car at the next level,” said Millbridge Speedway owner Jeremy Burnett.

“We want to give back to the Outlaw Kart racers; it’s been a great training ground for those guys,” said Kunz, who owns the team that has won the last four Chili Bowl races.  “It’s their dream to be able to run a Midget sometime, so we came up with an idea that we’re going to have a race.  The winner of the race, if they’re 16 at the beginning of the Chili Bowl (January 14, 2019), will get a ride for the Chili Bowl.  If they’re not, they’ll get a race somewhere else (with KKM).  It’s a chance for us to give back to the Outlaw Kart guys. It’s a race where you come run it, and if you win it, you’re in.

“It’s a great opportunity for some young kid out there that hasn’t had the chance and has the dream of being able to go do it.  We’re going to try to provide that to them.”

Keith Kunz Motorsports and Millbridge Speedway will be accepting entries from drivers all over North America.  The goal is to provide a unique opportunity to a driver who might otherwise not have the funding to compete in a Dirt Midget event. Drivers with experience in NASCAR’s national series, Dirt Midgets or Sprint Cars will not be eligible to win the free ride.

“We want kids from all over the United States to come run this,” Kunz stated.  “For somebody who doesn’t have a Chili Bowl ride and isn’t a regular Sprint Car driver or Midget driver, this is truly for somebody who has a dream of getting in a Midget to go race.  We don’t want these other guys coming in that already have a ride, there’s no use for that.  We’re going to take the applications, look through them and select a lot of drivers.  It’s open to everybody, but it’s more for the drivers that haven’t driven anything.”

Since becoming a team owner, Kunz has built an empire within the Dirt Midget ranks.  For many of his drivers, the Outlaw Kart ranks provided them with an opportunity to hone their skills before moving up to the next level.

“Since the beginning, since we ended up with Kyle Larson, Rico (Abreu) and now Logan Seavey, it’s just been a great training ground,” Kunz began.  “It teaches these guys momentum; momentum is a big part of Midget racing because of the low horsepower and it’s all about corner speed.  They really learn a lot of good driving skills in Outlaw Karts.  They’ve just been our go-to guys and this is a chance for somebody who doesn’t have the funding to go racing in a Midget.”

More information about the inaugural Keith Kunz Motorsports Give Back Classic at Millbridge Speedway will be announced soon.

Hoffman, Tucker, Crews, Corry, Totherow Score wins in Opening Night!

SALISBURY, N.C. – For the second year in a row, Nick Hoffman laid claim to the Wednesday Series season-opener at Millbridge Speedway, winning the headlining 20-lap Open division feature.

Nick Tucker (500 Outlaw), Brent Crews (Intermediate), Sam Corry (Box Stock) and Landon Totherow (Beginner Box Stock) were also victorious in their respective classes during the opening week of competition, which was postponed twice due to inclement weather before finally being completed.

Hoffman inherited the top spot with nine laps remaining, after polesitter and early leader Clark Houston’s kart stumbled down the backstretch before spinning in turn three with motor issues.

The Mooresville, N.C. resident then led the rest of the way, holding off late challenges from both Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series star Kyle Larson and reigning track champion Carson Kvapil en route to the win.

“It’s always pretty cool to come out here and race against these guys, and even cooler when we can pick up a win,” said Hoffman, a three-time UMP Modified champion during Volusia Speedway Park’s annual DIRTcar Nationals.

“I’ve raced against Kyle here a lot and figured he would be pretty good all night. He just put himself behind a little bit at the beginning, I felt like, because I definitely didn’t feel like I was as good as I needed to be at the end. I just had to block the (bottom) lane. All in all, this is cool. We just have to keep digging.”

The night’s racing was markedly different than in past years at Millbridge, as the preferred groove for most of the night was right around the inside berm of the sixth-mile dirt oval.

However, the one driver who was chasing Hoffman on the final restart was the one he was most worried about.

“I knew if anyone was going to make the top work, it was going to be Kyle (Larson),” Hoffman said. “My guys were signaling to me to get to the top in (turns) one and two and run the bottom in three and four … which I figured was going to be better because there was a hole in turn two that kept screwing me up.”

“It was a little bit different to run the bottom here; normally we beat the boards down here running the outside, so that was a bit of a change of pace, but we learned a lot tonight and we’ll bring it back for the next time and see if we can even up the lanes a little bit.”

After a debris caution with five to go tightened up the field, Kvapil was able to use a late slide job to steal the runner-up position, with Larson, Andrew Wehrli and Nick O’Dell completing the top five.

In other feature racing, Tucker – a former co-owner of Millbridge who hadn’t raced at the track since the summer of 2017 – made his return to the sixth-mile in triumphant fashion by picking up the win in the new 500 Outlaw class.

The 15-lap feature, featuring premier class karts with two-stroke motors, saw Tucker lead every lap from the pole. It was shortened after nine caution periods pushed the total running time of the main to more than 20 minutes.

That was no bother to Tucker, however, as he pulled away from the field on every restart.

“I just had a really good kart,” said Tucker. “Thanks to SKE for bringing something that held together all night. I don’t race here very often because I’m not as young as I used to be, but we come out here to have fun and this was fun tonight.”

Dylan Smith crossed the line as the runner-up, .697 of a second adrift of Tucker and ahead of Wehrli, Sam Platt and Karsyn Elledge.

Crews dominated the caution-free Intermediate feature, sliding Eli Adams for the lead on lap nine of 20 and then pulling away to a 1.263-second victory for his third career win in the class at Millbridge.

Caden Kvapil, Adams, Bregoli and Collin Scarborough completed the top five.

A late restart lifted Sam Corry to victory in the 20-lap Box Stock main event, after he passed Aiden Turner entering turn one with four laps to go and drove off to the victory over Turner, defending champion Trevor Cline, CJ Sweatt and Biscuit Williams.

Cassidy Keitt dominated the race, leading the first 16 laps from the pole, but spun out in turn two to draw the final caution flag that set up Corry’s pass for the win.

Landon Totherow led all the way for his first-career Millbridge win in the Beginner Box Stock class, holding off Ryan Zima on a one-lap dash in the 15-lap feature.

Chase Spaulding, Brody Snyder and Jaxon Merrifield finished third through fifth, respectively.
